Quantum Communication High Level Meeting at ESS in Sweden

Government representatives convene in Lund focusing on safeguarding sensitive data across Europe & the Nordics

Harvest now, decrypt later: How is classified and confidential information kept safely in the Era of Quantum?

Health data, financial information, critical infrastructure, and public communication need to be protected from cybercriminals who can already now intercept encrypted data and decrypt it later by using quantum computing.
Quantum technology is threatening both personal and sensitive governmental data making safeguarding an urgent societal challenge rather than a distant tech problem.

The QCIdk Cross Border Consortium, representing Denmark, Sweden, and Poland is planning the project’s first Ministerial Board Meeting at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund in September 2026. National quantum communication infrastructures the “NatQCIs” - all funded by the EU - have now successfully laid the foundation for quantum-safe security in each of the 27 EU-countries. The next step towards European digital resilience lies in a pan-European interoperability which in the coming years will be connecting these QCI national islands across borders in Europe and the Nordics.

European Sovereignty & Preparedness
The higher purpose of the QCIdk-CB project is to deploy Quantum Safe Network throughout Europe based on Quantum Key Distribution Technologies (QKD). By doing so, digital preparedness of the Quantum Threat is addressed and coordinated by the European Commission and The EuroQCI Initiative. Experts are predicting that advancements in quantum computing will make current asymmetric encryption methods unsafe by 2029 if not even before.

Therefore, close collaboration with key stakeholders like central ministries in Poland. Denmark, and Sweden is crucial and high level governmental representatives will play a key role in the project. Including the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs of Denmark, Ministry of Higher Education and Science Denmark, Danish Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. As well as Polish and Swedish ministries, who are all co-funding the project.

The project is spanning 3.5 years and the total budget is EUR 10 mio. The principal funding authority is the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA).

QCI.dk-Cross Border Project Launch: Pan-European Quantum Communication is coming closer!

Sweden, Denmark, and Poland have recently launched the EU Funded QCI.dk Cross Border Project with a duration of 42 months. During the coming years, the project partners will be deploying a secure, interoperable quantum communication infrastructure based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies across the EU Member States. Thereby they will be contributing to the wider interoperable European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative.

Thanks to all project partners for their constructive contributions to an awesome Kick Off Meeting held 2 + 3 February in a winter cold Copenhagen. Despite a freezing cold stay some very insightful and interesting discussions were carried through. Everyone has been showing great initial dedication and engagement in the project. Exciting and constructive collaboration will now take place during the next few years.

Cross-border quantum data security will be guaranteed using both undersea optical fiber cables and quantum-secure satellite links. EuroQCI ultimately aims to provide secure QCI spanning across the whole EU.

By implementing these new, disruptive technologies the project will be achieving and contributing to Europe’s preparedness for the post quantum cryptography era creating both digital resilience and engagement of a broad a user base as possible. Quantum Safe Network are just around the corner!
